WHAT HAPPENED TO ME: What happened to me could have happened to anyone. I considered myself fairly fit. I used to play golf about three times a week. I always walked the course each time. Consequently it came as a big shock to many that I had a stroke.
I suffered from an unexpected stroke on 11th January 2019. I had a very serious brain bleed, followed by a coma. The doctors hadn’t expected me to wake from the coma and actually wrote me off as a lost cause. By some miracle I eventually woke but discovered that I was paralysed down the left side of my body and couldn’t speak.
I was terrified because I felt completely helpless and had no idea if there would be any recovery. However, I managed to partly overcome my restrictions. I can now walk independently with a limp, move my left arm and fingers to be able to cook, learned to speak again, complete certain tasks and socialise with friends to claim back some of my life.
